As students return to school, everyone has a role in helping them get to and from school safely. Whether your student rides the bus, walks to school or a bus stop, or travels by car with a family member, a few important safety reminders can help make the start of the school year smoother and safer for everyone.
Bus Stop Safety
Families can use WebQuery to find their student’s bus stop, pickup and drop-off times, and bus number. Be sure to check your route before the first day of school.
Help your student be bus-ready:
- Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.
- Make sure your student knows their stop.
- Review bus safety expectations together.
- Stay alert and away from distractions while waiting for the bus.
School bus service begins Thursday, Sept. 3. Please double-check your student’s stop and pickup time so the first morning goes smoothly.

Driving Safely Around School Buses
Drivers also play an important role in keeping students safe. Slow down and stay alert when driving near school buses, bus stops and areas where students are walking.
Washington drivers must stop for school buses when required by law, including when the bus’s red lights are flashing and stop paddle is extended.

Walking Safely
Every day, students walk to and from school, bus stops and around their neighborhoods. Please review these reminders with your student:
- Stay aware: Keep your eyes on your surroundings, not on a phone or other device.
- Walk together: Use the buddy system and walk in groups whenever possible.
- Cross carefully: Cross at corners or marked crosswalks and watch for traffic.
- Avoid headphones: Stay alert to vehicles and activity around you.
- Report Suspicious Activities: Tell responsible adults about any suspicious activities or people encountered to or from school.
- Don’t accept anything from strangers: Never accept rides, gifts or other items from someone you don’t know.
- Stay in Well-lit Areas: Avoid alleys or poorly lit streets.
- Keep family informed: Let a family member know when you leave and when you expect to arrive.
- Know important information: Younger students should know their name, address, phone number and who to contact in an emergency.
- Know when to call 911: Review how and when to call for emergency help.
- Know where to get help: Identify safe places students can go if they feel unsafe.
